Job Description
Definition Under general supervision, the Senior Land Surveyor supervises and coordinates the activities of field and office surveying functions and assists the Survey and Mapping Manager with supervisory and administrative functions of the Survey Services Unit.
Distinguishing Characteristics This is a single position classification responsible for assisting the Survey and Mapping Manager in supervising the efforts of subordinate personnel including surveyors, engineering technicians, and consultants. The Senior Land Surveyor can be assigned to any of the following areas: supervision of survey activities in the field for design and construction projects, supervision of office surveying functions such as mapping, writing legal descriptions, and production of accurate calculations used for engineering, real estate and construction activities.
This classification requires that the incumbent be licensed as a Professional Land Surveyor in the State of California or equivalent and possess specialized knowledge of land surveying techniques and construction surveying, with emphasis on technology such as GPS (Global Positioning System) methodology and instrumentation. This position will supervise professional and/or administrative staff, as well as identify the need for establishing and administering consultant contracts. This position works with other public agencies (e.g., Caltrans, local cities and counties, water district) to establish property exchanges and rights of way for transportation improvements.
Advises survey staff regarding methods and techniques of surveying;
Provides direction to the Survey Department's Record Drawing Group as needed;
Coordinates surveying activities with real estate agents, engineers, inspectors, contractors, etc.;
Attends pre-construction meetings or assigns survey staff to attend and keeps informed on projects and related activities;
May recommend design changes to conform with field conditions;
May administer consultant contracts;
Supervises personnel performing office and/or field work required for preparation of Record of Survey Maps, Parcel Maps, Corner Records, legal descriptions, and construction layout plans for VTA projects;
Serves as Responsible Charge as described in the Professional Engineers' and Land Surveyors' Act including stamping, signing, and certifying the correctness of documents;
Interprets legal descriptions of real property;
Uses AutoCAD, Softdesk, and other computer aided design software in the development of maps and calculations;
Interacts with various public and private organizations;
Prepares clear and comprehensive reports and technical correspondences;
Performs technical surveying work as required including GPS surveying, running level loops, and producing maps and legal descriptions;
Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Employment Standards Sufficient training, education, and experience to demonstrate possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Development of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is typically obtained through training and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in surveying science, engineering or a related field and a minimum of eight (8) years of technical surveying experience, at least three (3) years of which must have been in a position comparable to that of a field surveying Chief of Party and/or office surveying "Lead" Land Surveyor. Directly related experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis.
Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor in the State of California or equivalent is required at the time of appointment.

Research land titles and determine ownership of property;
Interpret and evaluate legal descriptions of real property;
Analyze situations and determine appropriate courses of action;
Act independently under a minimum of direction;
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
Use AutoCAD or Softdesk and other software applications to produce maps, records, and engineering reports;
Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
