The Personal Genetics Education Project (pgEd.org) seeks motivated individuals to expand public engagement efforts on genetics. pgEd is working towards a future where everyone is aware about the personal, family, and social impacts of genetic advances, so people are better prepared to speak up, ask questions, and make informed decisions for themselves and their communities.
The Public Engagement Associate’s primary role will be to plan and facilitate forums that bring people together for conversations about genetics – from health to ancestry testing and from the environment to the criminal justice system. As a part of this work, they will initiate and maintain relationships with relevant stakeholders, including workshop participants. In addition, they will contribute to educational resources that explore ways that genetics is impacting people’s lives from scientific, ethical, and social perspectives.
The Public Engagement Associate will join an interdisciplinary team of scientists and educators. Strong candidates will have experience with public engagement, especially working with communities that have been marginalized, economically disadvantaged, or otherwise excluded from conversations about science.
Occasional travel required.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required. 3 or more years of experience preferably in education/engagement. Advanced degree may count towards experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Background in genetics helpful, but not required.
- Experience in education or science engagement is preferred, but not required Skill and comfort with leading and facilitating group discussions.
- Excellent public speaking, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Self-starter who is able to work independently to plan and implement programs.
- Team-oriented attitude and a willingness to pitch in on special projects as needed.
- Strong planning and organizational skills.
- Flexible and open to new ideas; ability to adapt to change.
Additional Information
This is a two-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.
This position is based in Boston, but the work may be done fully or primarily remote. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.
