PWA is seeking a licensed Environmental / Civil Engineer to serve as a member of our cross-disciplinary team performing watershed restoration planning, design, and construction projects throughout northern and central California.
PWA is a full service geologic and engineering consulting firm with offices in Humboldt and Sonoma counties. PWA specializes in science-based management solutions for the protection and restoration of watershed, forest, riverine, and coastal habitats, as well as rural development projects. Established in 1989, PWA includes a staff of 35 full-time geologists, engineers, geomorphologists, hydrologists, stormwater specialists, watershed scientists, biologists, and associated support personnel. Working in collaboration with PWA Principals, Senior Scientists, and Project Managers, the Environmental / Civil Engineer will develop, design, and oversee construction of watershed restoration, water resources, water quality, transportation, and rural development projects.
Typical Projects Include
• In-stream and off-channel aquatic habitat restoration and enhancement projects, particularly for imperiled salmonids
• Rural excavation and grading plans, erosion control plans, and site remediation designs
• Engineering soils reports and drainage plans
• Hillslope, embankment, and stream channel stability assessments, designs and repairs
• Ponds, reservoirs, and water catchment facility design
• Low impact development designs and stormwater engineering
• Bridges, culverts, and other stream crossing designs for rural roads
Typical Responsibilities
• Assists Senior Engineer and other Engineering staff, Project Managers, and PWA professionals with civil and environmental engineering projects
• Develops engineering designs per applicable standards, calculates engineering quantities, and prepares construction cost estimates and specifications
• Manages and inspects construction projects to verify contactor performance and adherence to engineering contract specifications; provides in-field design changes during construction
• Conducts hydraulic and CAD modeling and in-field feasibility review
• Performs and assists in soil and groundwater investigations, and topographic surveying
• Reviews designs, plans, specifications, and estimates for completeness and accuracy
• Authors and reviews technical documents, including basis of design reports
• Provides engineering-related assistance for preparation of grant funding applications, including permitting, engineering scope of work, budget estimates, and other planning documents
Position Details

• Position available at the McKinleyville or Petaluma, California offices
• Reimbursement for relocation expenses negotiable
• Out-of-town work intermittently required (primarily northern and central California)

Required Qualifications
• Licensure as a California Professional Civil Engineer (CA PE)
• BS or MS in engineering or physical sciences
• 4+ years of applied engineering work experience
• A passion for watershed/environmental conservation and restoration
Required Skills, Abilities and Experience
• Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D
• Preparation of design reports, construction plans, and contract specifications
• Total station surveying for topography and AutoCAD project designs
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
• High level of organizational skills; strong verbal and written communicator
• Ability to work independently, yet collaborates well with project team members
• Self-starter that takes initiative, demonstrates a positive attitude, and acts as a constructive and supportive team player
• Flexible with changing workload, timelines, and project requirements
• Ability to occasionally work and hike on steep, uneven terrain in inclement weather
• Current driver’s license and safe driving record
Preferred Skills and Abilities
• 1-D stream and floodplain hydraulic modeling experience including HEC-RAS
• Stormwater projects, grading, and construction inspection and oversight
• Rural road upgrading, including engineered road drainage and stream crossing designs
• Designs for on-site wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) and rural water supply systems
