The actual salary will be determined by the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. In addition to the starting salary, employees in the Senior Engineer classification shall also receive an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation pay.
The San José Fire Department (SJFD) is seeking to fill one Senior Engineer (Fire Protection) position in the Bureau of Fire Prevention (BFP).
Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, the Senior Engineer will perform a supervisory role providing leadership to a group of staff to include associate engineers that perform plan reviews and inspections of life safety systems, fire alarm systems, and fire suppression systems. The selected candidates will also perform administrative duties in support of the engineering division needs, monitor performance of the division, coordinate with other city agencies, write policies and procedures, and exercise judgment in the application of applicable codes such as California Fire Code, California Building Code, Title 19 Public Safety Code, and NFPA standards.

Education: Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Protection Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible professional engineering experience.
Licenses or Certificates: Possession of a Certificate of Registration in the required discipline (Fire Protection Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering). Possession of a valid State of California’s driver’s license is required.
