The Board of Trustees of the Traer Municipal Utilities is seeking a qualified and engaged leader to succeed the current General Manager (GM) who will retire in August 2020. Traer is a progressive community of approximately 1700 in northern Tama county Iowa located approximately 25 miles south of Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Iowa on Highway 63.
Traer Municipal Utilities management oversees the electric, gas, water, wastewater treatment and wireless internet utilities and provides reliable and affordable utility services to its residential, commercial and farm customers. Electric service is provided within the Traer city limits and a 42-mile rural distribution system in north Tama County. Traer Municipal Utilities is an active member of the Resale Power Group of Iowa and the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities. Electric power supply is obtained under a purchased power contract with the Resale Power Group of Iowa along with 25 other RPGI members. The GM is expected to be engaged in these organizations and the local organizations working to promote and improve Traer.
Successful GM candidates will be forward thinking, have high integrity and excellent relationship building and communication skills. A strong understanding of finance as it relates to utility budgeting and operations is required.
The General Manager is also responsible for supervision of contracts, oversight of utility assets, management of capital improvement projects, and keeping the five-member Board of Trustees fully advised of the utility’s financial condition and overall short term and long-term activities. Other responsibilities include oversight and coordination of the office staff that have been tasked with carrying out the daily activities required for the offices of the City Clerk and Utility Office Manager.

Candidates are required to have, at a minimum, 5-10 years at an electric utility and preferably have experience at the management level. Candidates must have broad electric utility experience and knowledge that includes such areas as operations and safety, strategic planning, team building, and member communications as well as the required regulatory compliance and reporting. Experience in or knowledge of operations of diesel generating units is desirable.
In addition, experience in the operations and management of natural gas systems and water and wastewater utilities is preferred. The successful candidate will either possess or be able to obtain from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources the required certification for the operations of the water and wastewater utilities. Candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word. The capability to effectively use PowerPoint is a plus.
