The Department of Pathology Division of Laboratory Medicine, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, seeks mature, highly motivated candidates to apply for a one year (July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020) fixed term position as clinical genomics scientist. This position will be focused on researching, organizing and implementing new assays for use in the Clinical Genomics Laboratory serving the University of Virginia Health System. The ideal candidate will have an in-depth understanding of molecular biology, genomics, and next-generation sequencing; experience in standard molecular biology methods; and excellent written and verbal communication skills. For candidates interested in pursuing a career and/or board certification in Laboratory Genetics and Genomics, this position offers a valuable opportunity in a state of the art Clinical Genomics Laboratory.
The successful candidate will be expected to: 1. Design and validate clinical genomic assays with direction and assistance from Department of Pathology Faculty; 2. Perform, analyze, and interpret clinical genomics assays; 3. Review literature, prepare presentations, and write manuscripts for publication;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics or related scientific field;
A track record of reliability, productivity, and success through previous scientific experience
Fundamental understanding of genetics and genomics
Hands-on experience of molecular biology techniques and principles
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Strong interpersonal skills, team-oriented, with excellent written and verbal communication
OTHER PREFERRED COMPETENCIES: Experience with NGS library generation and data analysis;
Experience working in a clinical laboratory
