VDOT’s Salem District Traffic Operations Center (TOC) is seeking an innovative and collaborative Traffic Engineer. This position reports to the Assistant District Traffic Engineer and will have the opportunity to work with engineering professionals in various specialty areas of transportation, such as construction, land use, location and design, and maintenance to conduct traffic engineering studies, develop engineered solutions, and address roadway safety & operational problems that impact motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. This Traffic Engineer will serve as a task leader on diverse teams and will be challenged to provide data and recommendations that resolve traffic problems, safety concerns, and improve traffic flow. This position will provide work zone support within the Salem District including preliminary engineering project development support, application of appropriate design standards, policies and procedures, review and/or development of Transportation Management Plans, and development of traffic control device quantities and cost estimates. In addition, the position will provide field support during construction, maintenance, and operations activities including review of field conditions, traffic switches, and emergency work zone setups as necessary. Successful candidate will also assist with traffic asset project development to include guardrail, signage, pavement markings and/or raised pavement markers. Knowledge to apply civil and traffic engineering principles and practices to roadway design, traffic safety and operations. Ability to develop and apply engineering solutions to complex traffic issues. Demonstrated knowledge of federal rules and regulations, including AASHTO and MUTCD, in specific chapter 6 of the MUTCD and or VWAPM. Ability to run and interpret roadway construction/maintenance plans. Experience writing and presenting technical engineering reports/solutions to diverse audience/stakeholders. Ability to lead work teams and to work in cooperation with internal and external stakeholders. Organizational and time management skills necessary to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
