The mission of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is to enhance the quality of life in our community by protecting and improving Montgomery County's air, water, and land in a sustainable way while fostering smart growth, a thriving economy, and healthy communities. DEP is seeking an experienced individual to serve as a full-time Senior Engineer in the Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Solid Waste Services, Central Operations Section.
This is non-supervisory professional engineering work. The primary purpose and responsibility of this position are to manage all aspects of the landfill programs including to implement all procurement, contractual, regulatory compliance, facility operations and maintenance, professional and public communication-related services for the post-closure care of three closed landfills in Montgomery County, Maryland.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Gude Landfill and associated site infrastructure, Maintenance Building, the decommissioned Gas-to-Energy Facility, Flare Station, existing projects (almost $30 million Capital Improvements Program (CIP) for toupee capping and land uses), and future facilities.
Oaks Landfill and associated site infrastructure, Scale House, Office/Maintenance Building, the Gas-to-Energy Facility, Flare Station, Leachate Pretreatment Facility and storage lagoons, the Oil/Grit Management Facility, existing projects (post-closure financial model and Nature and Extent (contamination) Investigation), and future facilities.
Beantown Dump and associated site infrastructure.
Regulatory compliance with various County, State, regional, and Federal agencies:
Public communication with various local and County organizations.
Serving as part of the County's emergency debris management team and may assist with planning and oversight of the management of large volumes of debris created by severe weather events. This effort may include establishing temporary staging areas and formal documentation of materials management quantities and expenses by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requirements.
The employee normally works in an office setting. However, the Senior Engineer visits work sites to inspect project status and resolve problems. During site visits, there may be exposure to hazardous materials that require the use of safety gear. This position also involves occasional standing for long periods, walking over rough and uneven terrain, stooping, bending, reaching and occasional climbing at work sites.

This position requires possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to drive a County vehicle to attend meetings, visit sites around Montgomery County to check project status and activities at landfills and industrial sites, and performing other work at locations outside the office.
Experience: Considerable (five (5) years) experience in engineering related to municipal solid waste landfills.
Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in engineering or a related discipline appropriate to the assigned position. Registration as a Professional Engineer may substitute for the degree.
Equivalency: An Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, provided such combination includes at least sixty (60) accredited semester hours (or an equivalent amount of accredited professional training) in engineering or related courses appropriate to the assigned position.
Driver's License: Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.
