The Senior Biomechanical Engineer will provide expert services related to the Injury Biomechanics research program, particularly related to material testing, biomedical instrumentation, and data acquisition and analysis, including the development of research plans and protocols to address existing or newly defined research questions according to policy and procedures of the USAARL.
DUTIES INCLUDE PROVIDING:
•Scientific analytical, engineering problem solving, design efforts, and experienced-based solutions related to creating, measuring, and evaluating biomechanical data for Soldier injury prevention through scientifically sound and approved protocols, policies, and/or research and test plans to ensure quality, accuracy, reproducibility, and relevance of data/results (e.g., by following procedures, recording and documenting efforts and results, and properly handling and storing data).
•Services related to preparing reports, presentations, manuscripts, and other documentation on research progress and findings, that will be ready for distribution and presentation (by incumbent or others) within the laboratory and/or at small or large scientific forums outside of USAARL.
•Engineering expertise in developing and writing standard operating procedures (SOPs) that will ensure scientific and sound engineering principles and safety procedures are implemented and followed per USAARL and MRMC approval process and existing policies. Such SOPs will be used during the execution of research protocols and research/test plans that may include volunteers, cadaveric specimens, animals, and/or other biological/biomedical and non-biological materials and devices, such as PPE. Such SOPs may include the operation of data acquisition, instrumentation, mechanical material characterization equipment, and impact devices.
•Biomedical engineering expertise in analyzing and evaluating ongoing research and testing through data and documentation, which may be self-prepared or prepared by others and can include in-house materials, internal government documentation/data, and public-released data/documentation related to injuries, laboratory, and/or field injury biomechanics exposures. This expertise should be demonstrated through providing written and oral summaries, critiques, and evaluations for intramural and extramural evaluations/justifications.
•Biomedical engineering expertise in preparing for injury biomechanics research studies, including collaborative work with industrial, military, and academic customers and partners, design work for fabrication of biomechanical test equipment/devices, troubleshooting instrumentation and other equipment necessary for research purposes, and selection and justification of materials/supplies/equipment necessary for successful injury biomechanics research.
•Reliable, timely, and quality customer service to industrial, military, and academic customers in meeting customer, project, and/or program timelines through the development and execution of test plans and protocols, analysis of laboratory, field, and theater data, analysis and documentation of findings related to injuries and/or PPE.
•Conduct of injury biomechanics research with equipment and field settings that may create potentially hazardous conditions.
•Deliverables associated with tasks shall be issued at the task order level.
Education: Masters level degree is preferred in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering with a Mechanical Engineering focus, or a Bachelors level degree with substantial years of experience (beyond those listed below)
Experience: at least 10 years of experience: •Biomechanical investigations and/or testing
•Developing biomechanical and/or biomedical protocols investigate or evaluate human, animal, and/or equipment interactions for injury causation or protection.
•Executing biomechanical and/or biomedical protocols and analyzing data.
•Working with industry and customers on biomechanical/biomedical products, solutions, or cases.
•Experience, demonstrated ability to:
•Use hand tools, climb and descend equipment, test device, or vehicle ladders, work outdoors in environmental extremes with rough terrain, and lift and carry 50 lbs.
•Fabricate test fixtures and mechanical components using standard shop tools and equipment to include band saws, mill, grinders, drill press, etc.
•Provide technical marketing, funding-source development, and maintaining customer and collaborator relations.
•Determine mechanical material failure (including testing devices) and impact devices, vehicle (air, ground, water) safety systems, personnel protective equipment (PPE), instrumentation (load cells, accelerometers, etc), and data acquisition equipment.
•Use Fast Fourier Transform frequency analysis associated with time based acceleration data.
•Effectively employ Safety Management System concepts and principles to all areas of operation.
•Coordinate activities, such as laboratory studies, research projects, or injury causation investigations.
•Work with at least 5 of the following areas: human anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, dynamics, military PPE, epidemiology, head and spine injuries.
•Manage and maintain biomedical and/or critical study data.
•Document and present study or investigation findings in professional and technical venues.
•Work independently with minimal strategic and application direction and with no technical direction to solve analytic, theoretical, and technical problems.
•Demonstrated proficiency in the following areas:
•Project Management experience with MS Project software or similar Project Management programs.
•High Speed Video system cameras, lighting, and lens selection, to include pre-test production and post-test analysis.
•TEMA 2D, 3D and 6DOF video tracking software to conduct post-test high speed video processing and analysis.
•FARO Arm 3D measurement equipment and software programs.
•Design, layout, set-up, and operation of data acquisition systems used to collect data on biological specimens, Anthropomorphic Test Dummies, and mechanical systems.
•Mechanical design and analysis experience utilizing 3D CAD design suites (Solidworks or equivalent software) and FEA experience.
•Managing, maintaining, operating and modifying high energy acceleration test platforms and equipment.
•MATLAB developing functions, codes and user friendly interfaces for data input, data analysis and plotting of collected time based data and FFT data.
•To travel CONUS or O-CONUS to conduct testing and research, attend working groups meetings, workshops, conferences, or other relevant meetings.
•On written authority of the Laboratory Commander, to fly on military aircraft or ride in military vehicles in the official conduct of duties of the position.
