The City of Torrance Public Works Department is seeking an experienced, self-motivated Associate Engineer to join their team!
Under the direction of a Division Manager, the Associate Engineer manages engineering projects, supervises professional and technical engineering staff, and performs complex, professional level engineering work. The primary duties of this position are to manage Capital Improvement Projects related to roadways, traffic signals, water mains, sewer facilities, and storm drains.
The Associate Engineer reviews and recommends the approval of engineering plans, drawings and specifications, cost estimates, contract provisions, legal descriptions, and maps, ensuring compliance with subdivision policies and local and state codes, ordinances and regulations; coordinates projects with other City departments, agencies and utilities as required; and may oversee permitting procedures. In addition, this position receives and responds to public inquiries regarding current or planned projects; attends division and department meetings as required; and performs various administrative duties.
PREMIUM PAY Up to an additional 5% per hour of premium pay based on certification.
Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience that would have provided the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be: Graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor's degree in engineering.
Three years professional engineering field and office experience. Experience or training in engineering computer applications is desirable.
License and/or Certificates Must possess and maintain an appropriate, valid California driver's license. A valid certificate of registration issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers is desirable.
Ideal Candidate In addition to the above, the most successful candidate will posses the following experience, certifications, skills, and abilities:
Managed at least 3 major public works projects and the related consultant contracts within the last 3 years;
Valid certificate of registration issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers (Civil preferred);
Experience or training in engineering computer applications;
Proficient computer skills in Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, and Outlook);
Effective written and oral communication skills;
Outstanding public relations skills;
Excellent organizational skills; and
